Day-Trip Destination Guide from Sorrento
Pompeii from Sorrento
Pompeii is approximately 27 km from central Sorrento — typically a 35 to 50-minute drive by private car via the A3 motorway. The archaeological site covers 44 hectares, with the Forum, the House of the Faun, the Stabian Baths and the plaster-cast exhibition among the essential areas. Most visitors with a private driver comfortably cover the main sites in 2.5 to 3 hours. The private drop-off at Porta Marina gate puts you closest to the main areas immediately, saving the 15-minute walk from the coach parks. Pompeii works as a standalone half-day tour from Sorrento or as a morning stop before an afternoon on the Amalfi Coast.
Herculaneum from Sorrento
Herculaneum is approximately 40 km from Sorrento — around 45 to 60 minutes by private car. It is smaller than Pompeii but better preserved: the organic material (wooden furniture, food, textiles) survived because the site was sealed by volcanic mud rather than ash. For visitors who have already seen Pompeii or who want a less crowded site, Herculaneum is the better choice. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours inside. It pairs well with Pompeii for a full archaeological day, or with Vesuvius for a geological and historical combination.
Mount Vesuvius from Sorrento
Mount Vesuvius is approximately 32 km from Sorrento — around 40 to 60 minutes to the summit car park. From the car park, the walk to the crater rim takes approximately 30 minutes on a maintained gravel path. The rim is at 1,281 metres and the view across the Bay of Naples on a clear day is exceptional. Most visitors spend 1.5 to 2 hours at the site. Vesuvius is best combined with Pompeii or Herculaneum on the same day. Note that the summit walk requires sturdy footwear; sandals are not suitable.
The Amalfi Coast from Sorrento
Sorrento is the natural gateway to the Amalfi Coast. Positano is 17 km south — approximately 30 to 45 minutes by private car. Amalfi town is 35 km, typically 50 to 65 minutes. Ravello is 40 km, approximately 60 to 75 minutes via the hillside road above Amalfi. A full-day Amalfi Coast tour from Sorrento typically follows the SS163 south, stopping in Positano, Praiano and either Amalfi town or Ravello. Traffic between June and August can extend drive times by 20 to 30 minutes in each direction.
Naples City from Sorrento
Naples is approximately 50 km from Sorrento by the motorway — typically 50 to 70 minutes by private car. As a day trip from Sorrento, Naples works well for a half-day cultural visit: the historic centre (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Museo Archeologico Nazionale (which holds the finest Pompeii collection in the world) and the Spaccanapoli neighbourhood. Naples can also be combined as a morning stop before continuing to Pompeii, which is between the two towns on the return route.

Who This Tour Is For
Hotel Guests in Sorrento
Sorrento is one of the most popular bases for exploring the wider region. A private day trip to Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast or Vesuvius from your hotel puts an expert driver at your door without the stress of renting a car on roads that require local knowledge.
Families
Private vehicles mean no rigid schedules. If the children need a break or extra time at the Pompeii cast exhibits, the itinerary adjusts. Booster seats and infant seats are available on request.
Couples
A private vehicle for two, stopping for espresso in Praiano or spending an extra hour in Ravello, is a fundamentally different experience from a group coach. Sorrento tours are built for this kind of day.
Travellers Using Sorrento as a Hub
Many visitors to Southern Italy use Sorrento as a central base for 3 to 7 days. Our multi-day and combined tour options let you cover Pompeii one day, the Amalfi Coast the next and Vesuvius the day after — all with hotel pickup each morning.

How Your Hotel Pickup Works
Not Sure Which Tour Fits Your Days in Sorrento?
| Your Situation | Best Tour Type | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Half day in Sorrento only | Sorrento Town Highlights — Piazza Tasso, historic centre, Marina Grande | 3–4 hours covers the main sites without feeling rushed. Ideal for cruise passengers with limited time. |
| Full day, archaeology preference | Pompeii + Herculaneum or Pompeii + Vesuvius | Pompeii and Herculaneum are only ~12 km apart — an efficient pairing for history travellers. |
| Full day, scenery preference | Sorrento + Positano + Praiano | Drive south along the coastal road for one of the most scenic routes in Southern Italy. |
| Full day, all sites | Pompeii + Sorrento + Positano | A structured full day covering archaeology in the morning and coastal scenery in the afternoon. |
| Travelling with young children | Sorrento town + Pompeii highlights only | Sorrento has wide open spaces. Pompeii is visually engaging for older children. Avoid the Amalfi cliff roads with very young children if possible. |
| Multi-day stay (hub traveller) | Day 1: Pompeii + Herculaneum | Day 2: Amalfi Coast | Day 3: Vesuvius | Sorrento's central location makes it the best base in Southern Italy. We can plan all three days with hotel pickup each morning. |
| Large group (8+ people) | Any tour with minibus option | We accommodate 8 to 14 in a single minibus. Larger groups travel in two coordinated vehicles. |

FAQ
Q: Is Sorrento a good base for visiting Pompeii?
A: Yes. Sorrento is one of the best bases for visiting Pompeii. The site is approximately 27 km from central Sorrento — around 35 to 50 minutes by private car. A private driver picks you up from your hotel and drops you at the Porta Marina entrance, which is closest to the main areas of the site.
Q: How long does it take to drive from Sorrento to Positano?
A: Positano is approximately 17 km from Sorrento and the drive typically takes 30 to 45 minutes along the coastal SS163 road. In July and August, traffic can extend this to 60 minutes or more. April to June and September are significantly faster.
Q: Can I visit both Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast in one day from Sorrento?
A: Pompeii plus the full Amalfi Coast in a single day is not practical — there is insufficient time to do both properly. A more workable combination is Pompeii in the morning followed by Sorrento town and Positano in the afternoon. Alternatively, dedicate separate days to each.
Q: Is Sorrento walkable or do I need transport to see the area?
A: Sorrento town itself is walkable — Piazza Tasso, the historic centre, the cliffside gardens and the Marina Grande are all reachable on foot in 1.5 to 2 hours. However, the day-trip destinations (Pompeii, Vesuvius, Positano, Ravello) are not accessible without a vehicle or public transport, and public transport is significantly slower and less flexible than a private driver.
Q: Can I get to Capri from Sorrento?
A: Yes. The Sorrento ferry port connects directly to Capri by hydrofoil, with a crossing of approximately 50 minutes. A Capri day trip is best booked as a standalone day rather than combined with a land-based tour, as the ferry schedule and the island itself require a full day. Ask us about combined Sorrento-and-Capri arrangements.
Q: What is the best month to visit Sorrento?
A: May, June and September offer the best balance of warm weather, manageable crowds and shorter drive times to the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii. July and August are the busiest months; the SS163 coastal road can be significantly congested. October is quieter and the light is excellent for photography.
Q: Can I visit Vesuvius without going to Pompeii?
A: Yes. Vesuvius works as a standalone half-day tour from Sorrento. The drive to the summit car park is approximately 40 to 60 minutes and the crater walk is around 30 minutes each way. The geological experience is different from the archaeological one at Pompeii and is worth doing separately if you are spending several days in the region.
Q: Do I need to book in advance?
A: e recommend booking at least 48 hours before your preferred tour date. During peak season (May to September) vehicles fill quickly, particularly for full-day combinations that require larger minivans. Last-minute requests may be possible but cannot be guaranteed.
Q: What type of vehicles do you use?
A: We use Mercedes-Benz sedans, minivans and minibuses depending on group size. All vehicles are air-conditioned, regularly serviced and fully licensed for passenger transport. Infant seats and booster seats are available on request.
Q: Can I book multiple day trips for several days in Sorrento?
A: Yes. Many of our guests use Sorrento as a hub for three to seven days and book a different tour each day. We can plan and coordinate multiple bookings with hotel pickup each morning. Contact us before your trip and we will send a suggested daily itinerary based on your available days and priorities.
Q: What is included in the tour price?
A: The price covers the private vehicle, English-speaking driver, fuel and motorway tolls. Entrance tickets to sites (Pompeii, Vesuvius, etc.), meals and personal expenses are not included. We can advise on current ticket prices and help with pre-booking to skip queues at major sites.
