Positano from the Amalfi Coast Road
Positano is approximately 57 km from Naples by road and 17 km from Sorrento – typically a 30 to 45-minute drive from Sorrento depending on traffic and season. The village cascades down a steep hillside to a small beach, and most of the movement is on foot via steps and narrow lanes. The main drag, Via dei Mulini, leads to the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, known for its tiled dome. Most visitors spend 1.5 to 2 hours here. Positano is significantly more crowded in July and August; April to June and September are better months for a relaxed visit.
Ravello from the Amalfi Coast Road
Ravello sits 350 metres above sea level on a ridge above Amalfi town, approximately 40 km from Sorrento. The approach is a steep, winding drive of about 7 km from the coastal road. The village is famous for its two historic gardens: Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. Villa Rufolo’s terrace, used as the backdrop for the Ravello Festival each summer, offers one of the most photographed panoramas on the coast. Most visitors spend 2 to 2.5 hours across both villas. Ravello pairs naturally with Amalfi town, which is only 5 km below.
Amalfi Town from the Coast Road
Amalfi town was once the capital of a powerful maritime republic and the architecture reflects that history. The Duomo di Sant’Andrea dominates the main piazza and is the most visited building in town. The old paper mills in the Valle dei Mulini — reachable on foot from the centre — illustrate Amalfi’s medieval industry. From Sorrento, Amalfi town is approximately 35 km — typically 50 to 65 minutes. Allow at least 90 minutes in the town to see the Duomo, the main square and the valley walk.
Praiano from the Coast Road
Praiano is the quieter alternative to Positano, approximately 24 km from Sorrento and around 6 km from Positano along the coast road. It is less visited and more local in character, with a small harbour and the church of San Gennaro overlooking the bay. The Furore Fjord, a dramatic narrow inlet cut into the cliffs, is located between Praiano and Amalfi town and is one of the most distinctive viewpoints on the SS163. Most visitors spend 45 to 60 minutes here, often as a photographic stop rather than a full visit.
Vietri sul Mare from the Coast Road
Vietri sul Mare marks the eastern end of the Amalfi Coast, approximately 50 km from Sorrento and adjacent to Salerno. It is the centre of the Italian ceramic tradition on the coast — the brightly coloured ceramics found throughout the Amalfi villages originate here. The old town is compact and walkable. Vietri is less visited than Positano or Ravello, making it a good choice for travellers who want to avoid high-season crowds while still experiencing authentic coastal culture.
