Village & Destination Guide

Positano from the Amalfi Coast Road

Positano is approximately 57 km from Naples by road and 17 km from Sorrento – typically a 30 to 45-minute drive from Sorrento depending on traffic and season. The village cascades down a steep hillside to a small beach, and most of the movement is on foot via steps and narrow lanes. The main drag, Via dei Mulini, leads to the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, known for its tiled dome. Most visitors spend 1.5 to 2 hours here. Positano is significantly more crowded in July and August; April to June and September are better months for a relaxed visit.

Distance from Sorrento: ~18 km  |  Drive time: 30–45 min  |  Recommended time on site: 1.5–2 hours

Ravello from the Amalfi Coast Road

Ravello sits 350 metres above sea level on a ridge above Amalfi town, approximately 40 km from Sorrento. The approach is a steep, winding drive of about 7 km from the coastal road. The village is famous for its two historic gardens: Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. Villa Rufolo’s terrace, used as the backdrop for the Ravello Festival each summer, offers one of the most photographed panoramas on the coast. Most visitors spend 2 to 2.5 hours across both villas. Ravello pairs naturally with Amalfi town, which is only 5 km below.

Distance from Sorrento: ~40 km  |  Drive time: 60–75 min  |  on site time: 2–2.5 hours

Amalfi Town from the Coast Road

Amalfi town was once the capital of a powerful maritime republic and the architecture reflects that history. The Duomo di Sant’Andrea dominates the main piazza and is the most visited building in town. The old paper mills in the Valle dei Mulini — reachable on foot from the centre — illustrate Amalfi’s medieval industry. From Sorrento, Amalfi town is approximately 35 km — typically 50 to 65 minutes. Allow at least 90 minutes in the town to see the Duomo, the main square and the valley walk.

Distance from Sorrento: ~35 km  |  Drive time: 50–65 min  |  On-site time: 1.5–2 hours minimum

Praiano from the Coast Road

Praiano is the quieter alternative to Positano, approximately 24 km from Sorrento and around 6 km from Positano along the coast road. It is less visited and more local in character, with a small harbour and the church of San Gennaro overlooking the bay. The Furore Fjord, a dramatic narrow inlet cut into the cliffs, is located between Praiano and Amalfi town and is one of the most distinctive viewpoints on the SS163. Most visitors spend 45 to 60 minutes here, often as a photographic stop rather than a full visit.

Distance from Sorrento: ~24 km  |  Drive time: 40–50 min  |  On-site time: 45–60 min

Vietri sul Mare from the Coast Road

Vietri sul Mare marks the eastern end of the Amalfi Coast, approximately 50 km from Sorrento and adjacent to Salerno. It is the centre of the Italian ceramic tradition on the coast — the brightly coloured ceramics found throughout the Amalfi villages originate here. The old town is compact and walkable. Vietri is less visited than Positano or Ravello, making it a good choice for travellers who want to avoid high-season crowds while still experiencing authentic coastal culture.

Distance from Sorrento: ~50 km  |  Drive time: 70–90 min  |  On-site time: 1–1.5 min

Travel Distances & Times Reference Table

Who This Tour Is For

Cruise Passengers

Arriving at Salerno or Naples for the day? A private Amalfi Coast tour is the most time-efficient way to see the coastline. Your driver handles the SS163 so you spend the day watching the view, not the road.

Families

Private vehicles mean no rushing and no stranger-filled coaches. Stop when the children need a break. Booster seats and infant seats available on request.

Couples

A private car winding through Positano, Praiano and Ravello with stops wherever you choose is a different experience from a 50-seat coach. The Amalfi Coast was made for this kind of day.

Photographers & Landscape Travellers

The viewpoints along the SS163 — above Positano, at the Furore Fjord, on the hillside above Ravello — are unmissable. Tell your driver which shots you want and we will stop at the right moments.

What Sets Our Amalfi Coast Apart

The Amalfi Coast is served by hundreds of tour operators. Here is why travellers who have been on a Benvenuto tour do not look for an alternative next time.

We Know the SS163 Like No One Else

The Amalfi Coast road is not a motorway. Every bend, every passing point and every traffic peak is something our drivers navigate daily. You get the scenic route, not the stressful one.

Operating Since 1948

Over seven decades on the Amalfi Coast means we have seen every season, every crowd level and every shortcut. We do not guess — we know.

Mercedes-Benz Fleet, Fully Licensed

Sedans for couples, minivans for families, minibuses for larger groups — all air-conditioned, serviced and covered by full passenger liability insurance.

Drivers Who Tell the Story

The Amalfi Coast has centuries of history. Our drivers are trained in the local heritage — the maritime republic, the paper-making tradition, the Saracen watchtowers. Ask and they will tell it properly.

400+ Verified TripAdvisor Reviews

Our 5.0-star rating reflects real traveller experiences. We do not chase reviews — guests leave them because the day delivered exactly what was described.

Direct Contact, No Middlemen

Book directly with Benvenuto and communicate with our operations team. Questions before you travel? Call or email and a real person responds — usually within the hour.

How Your Pickup Works

No confusion at the hotel, no sign-hunting at the cruise terminal — here is exactly what happens from the moment you are ready to leave.
1
Booking confirmation with driver details
After you book, we send a confirmation with your driver’s name, mobile number and vehicle plate. No uncertainty on the day.
2
We plan around your starting point
Tell us your hotel or cruise terminal and we build the pickup around your location. We arrive 5 minutes early.
3
Driver waits for you
Your driver will be at the agreed pickup point holding a sign with your name. If you are coming from a cruise terminal, your confirmation will state the exact meeting point.
4
Coastal day on your terms
Once you are in the vehicle the route is yours. Spend longer in Positano, add a coffee stop in Amalfi town, pause at a viewpoint above Praiano — your driver follows your lead.
5
Return with a built-in buffer
Every itinerary is planned to return you with at least 45 minutes to spare. If traffic on the SS163 is heavy, your driver reroutes immediately and keeps you informed.

Not Sure Which Tour Fits Your Day?

The Amalfi Coast has many villages and a limited number of hours in a day. Use this guide to match your available time to the right itinerary.
Your Situation Best Tour Type Why It Works
4–5 hours available Half-Day: Positano only or Ravello only or Amalfi town Enough time for one village comfortably. Half-day tours are timed around tighter schedules.
6–7 hours available Full-Day: Positano + Praiano or Amalfi town + Ravello Two close villages work in a 6-hour window. Amalfi and Ravello are only ~5 km apart.
8–9 hours available Full-Day: Full Amalfi Coast (Positano + Ravello + Amalfi) or Sorrento + Positano The SS163 takes time to drive well. 8+ hours is the minimum to enjoy the full stretch without pressure.
Travelling with children Positano + Praiano or Sorrento + Positano Positano has walkable steps and a beach. Sorrento has wide piazzas and easy movement for families.
Photography is the priority Full Amalfi Coast (all main viewpoints) Ravello’s Villa Rufolo gardens are one of the most scenic spots on the coast. Recommended add-on.
Scenery over archaeology Amalfi Coast + Optional Ravello Gardens The coastal road between Positano and Ravello is one of the most photographed drives in Europe. Prioritise this if the landscape matters more than archaeology.
Large group (8+ people) Any full-day with minibus option We accommodate 8 to 14 in a single minibus. Larger groups travel in two coordinated vehicles.

FAQ

Q: How long does it take to drive the Amalfi Coast?

A: The full SS163 from Sorrento to Vietri sul Mare is approximately 50 km (the full coastal road from Sorrento to Salerno is approximately 60 km) and takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to drive without stops. With stops in Positano, Ravello and Amalfi town, a full-day tour typically covers the route in 7 to 9 hours. Traffic between June and August can extend drive times significantly.

Q: What is the best time of year to visit the Amalfi Coast?

A: April to early June and September to October are the best months. The road is less congested, the light is excellent and the villages are accessible without summer crowds. July and August are the busiest months on the coast; the road can be significantly slower and parking extremely limited.

Q: Is the Amalfi Coast road suitable for people who dislike heights?

A: The SS163 runs along cliff edges with drops to the sea. It is a narrow road with tight bends. For most passengers this is part of the visual experience; for those who are very sensitive to heights, the inland route via the mountains can be used for part of the journey. Let us know at booking and your driver will plan accordingly

Q: Can I visit both Positano and Ravello in one day?

A: Yes. Positano and Ravello can be combined in a full-day tour. The typical order is Positano in the morning (fewer crowds), then Amalfi town for lunch, then up to Ravello in the afternoon. A day that includes all three requires at least 8 hours.

Q: Is Positano walkable?

A: Positano is steep. Most movement is via steps and the main road. Comfortable shoes are essential. There is no flat path from the drop-off point to the beach; visitors descend and then climb back. For those with mobility concerns, your driver can advise on the most accessible route and drop-off point.

Q: Can I visit the Amalfi Coast from a cruise ship?

A: Yes. Cruise passengers arriving at Naples or Salerno can visit the Amalfi Coast on the same day. The most practical approach is a private tour with a driver who monitors your ship’s schedule. We guarantee return to your pier before all-aboard.

Q: What is the Furore Fjord?

A: The Furore Fjord is a narrow rocky inlet cut into the cliffs between Praiano and Conca dei Marini. It is one of the most dramatic viewpoints on the Amalfi Coast and a well-known photography spot. Your driver can stop at the bridge above for a photograph. It is typically a 10 to 15-minute stop.

Q: Do I need to book the Amalfi Coast tour in advance?

A: We recommend booking at least 48 hours before your travel date. During the peak season (May to September), tours fill quickly. Last-minute requests may be possible but availability cannot be guaranteed, especially for larger vehicles.

Q: What type of vehicles do you use on the Amalfi Coast?

A: We use Mercedes-Benz sedans, minivans and minibuses depending on group size. All vehicles are air-conditioned, properly maintained and licensed for passenger transport. The vehicles are appropriate for the Amalfi Coast road, which is not suitable for large coaches.

Q: Can I customise my Amalfi Coast itinerary?

A: Yes. Private tours are fully customisable. If you want to spend more time in Ravello, skip a village or add a specific viewpoint stop, tell us at booking and we plan accordingly. The itinerary is yours, not a fixed schedule.

Q: What is included in the tour price?

A: The price covers the private vehicle, English-speaking driver, fuel and motorway tolls. Entrance tickets to villas or sites (such as Villa Rufolo in Ravello), meals and personal expenses are not included. We can advise on current ticket prices and assist with pre-booking to avoid queues.
