Before the year 1853 only old bourbon roads existed along the Amalfi coast that inherited their name from the royal family of that period who were dominating the South of Italy. However, in 1853, these roads were transformed into the first 40 km's linking Positano to Vietri sul Mare, suitable for transportation of carriages, built by robbing natural resources thus being cut out of the mountain cliff face. From this road, it was possible to catch sight of the first chauffeur of the coast.
In 1948, the person that drove the old "Austin" for the first time, was my grandfather, named Giovanni Benvenuto.
Initially, the lifestyle along the Amalfi coast was a very simple and peaceful routine. It was the husband and father who were the unique breadwinners of the family that spent the entire night at sea, fishing to feed the family and cooking the catch of the day over the fireplace during the evenings. In the home of the Benvenuto family however, life was different. Giovanni, the founder of the family, supported his wife and children not only by fishing at sea each night to feed his kindred, but by taking his van around the coast once he had returned from sea, also to sell his catch. In order for his family to be able to live in better conditions, he later began working as the driver for the priest of the village. As and when required, Giovanni accompanied the priest wherever his wanted to go.
As time passed by, tourists began to discover the beauty existing along the Amalfi coast, and there after tourism in the area escalated into large numbers. This undoubtedly affected the population of the coast and also heavily influenced the Benvenuto family. It was the priest who recommended that Giovanni slowing changed the activity of his work from a simple fisherman, into a driver for the tourists. With his new Fiat 1100, that he called “Giuseppina”, after the name of the woman who he had the honour to marry, he began accompanying the tourists as they visited the most delightful sites of the natural coastline. He was always a true gentleman, forever calling all the women he met “Belle Margherite” (“Beautiful Daisy”).
His reputation soon became distinguished in the area, and before long, word reached the Admiral of King Umberto II di Savoia’s army, who my grandfather previously built a friendship with when they worked together during the second world war. Subsequently, my grandfather also had the pleasure to drive the Admiral when commuting between his base in Naples and the Amalfi coast. From there his fortune expanded further when the Admiral highly commended my grandfather for his services and good will, assigning him to the driver of the King. Throughout the years, the King and my grandfather became quite acquainted; and after the referendum when Italy had to decide between a Republic and a Monarchy, the King was temporarily relocated to Ravello. During this period, the king and my grandfather spent much of their spare time fishing together in Praiano.
Together with Giovanni and after, my father Umberto continued driving. Prior to embarking upon this work, my father was a Captain of the Navy. Life at sea enabled him to see and visit the whole world that eventually gave him the opportunity to understand his home was Praiano, where he adopted the work of his father.
Now myself, Giovanni Benvenuto, and my father, using his experience and that of my grandfather, continue to uncover the outstanding beauty and breathtaking scenery to all tourists that not only visit this Divine coast but the whole of Italy.
